Location
Founded in 1967, Saint Louis University - Madrid Campus is the American Jesuit university in Spain. The Madrid Campus enrolls approximately 650 undergraduate and 25 graduate students each academic semester. Students learn in a truly global environment with 50% coming from the U.S., 20% coming from Spain, and 30% coming from more than 65 different countries.
Madrid, one of Europe's largest capital cities, offers students the perfect backdrop of endless opportunities for learning and fun. Campus is located in the northwestern part of central Madrid (the city's university district) with open views of the mountains to the north and west, and superb metro (subway) and bus access. Students can reach the city's historical center on foot in about 30 minutes or by metro or bus in 15 minutes.
Accreditations
The Madrid Campus is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as an integral part of Saint Louis University. Individual schools and programs on the St. Louis Campus also maintain separate accreditations (e.g., business, engineering, music, nursing) with their respective professional organizations. We are the only full-campus U.S. university recognized by the Madrid higher education authority, Consejería de Educación y Cultura. Facilities
Campus is comprised of four historical, restored buildings with traditional Spanish charm that house classrooms, faculty and staff offices, student lounge and study areas, computer rooms, science labs, a cafeteria, a bookstore, an art studio, and a library. Campus buildings are all equipped with wireless internet access. The University encourages those students seeking housing to take advantage of the Host Family option through which students who wish to experience Spanish society to the fullest can be part of a Spanish household. As a further service to its students, Saint Louis University provides guidance and selective referrals to students who are seeking housing outside of the University system in a Spanish dormitory (colegio mayor) orapartment.
Activities
The Office of Student Life facilitates an array of activities for the student body including athletics, cultural outings, academic trips, campus publications, campus ministry, and student organizations. Popular athletics activities include basketball, soccer, volleyball, horseback riding, yoga/pilates, hiking, skiing, kayaking, and much more. Each semester, Madrid Campus students also put on a theatre production, Latin and Flamenco dance performance, and musical concert.
Financial Aid
First-year students who apply to the Madrid Campus of Saint Louis University are automatically considered for Madrid Campus merit-based scholarships ranging from 1,000 € - 4,000 € per semester. These awards are based on a student's academic credentials as demonstrated by previous coursework, test scores, and the potential to enhance the academic and extracurricular environment of the University. Transfer students who apply to the Madrid Campus of Saint Louis University are automatically considered for the Madrid Campus Javier merit-based scholarship of 2,000 € per semester. There are also scholarships for students coming from Jesuit high schools, and for families with more than one dependent child enrolled simultaneously at Saint Louis University (St. Louis and/or Madrid Campus). Each semester the University also makes available a limited number of work-grant campus opportunities through which students assist departments throughout the University for up to ten hours per week in exchange for a reduction in tuition fees (roughly 10-15%). U.S. citizens and permanent residents are also eligible for Saint Louis University need-based financial aid (federal, state and private funded student aid programs) by submitting the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
Year Tuition and Fees
2011-2012 per semester tuition and fees for students at the Saint Louis University- Madrid Campus are € 8140 for all permanent students and € 9000 for visiting (study abroad) U.S. students. Room and board costs average € 3000 per semester, depending on accommodations. Books and supplies cost approximately € 500 per semester. Special Program Features
As an international campus of Saint Louis University, the Madrid Campus designs courses to take advantage of its location in Europe. The Campus sponsors a wide range of extracurricular activities, both on and off campus, including trips that deepen student's cultural understanding of Spain or that complement their studies by taking them to other destinations, including countries in Europe, Africa and South America.
In coordination with the Association of American International Colleges and Universities, students can pursue study abroad opportunities at partner schools in Europe, Asia, and South America.
Business and engineering students with the required level of Spanish language skills are encouraged to pursue internships in the offices of multinational corporations, such as Hewlett-Packard, Kodak, and John Deere, which are all located in Madrid.
Academic Programs
Students majoring in Spanish, Communication, Political Science/International Relations, Economics, and Business Administration/International Business can complete all 120 credits hours on the Madrid Campus; students majoring in English are required to spend a single semester at the St. Louis Campus. Students majoring in Political Science/International Relations are required to take two classes with Saint Louis University professors either at the St. Louis Campus or during a summer session in Madrid. Many students also choose to complete the first two years of their degree in Madrid and then transfer to the St. Louis Campus where they can complete any of SLU's 85+ undergraduate degree programs.
In addition to offering undergraduate programs, the Madrid Campus also offers a Master's degree in English language and literature and another in Spanish language and literature. The Master's in English is a dual-degree program offered year-round with the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and requires one 6-week summer session on the St. Louis Campus. The Master's in Spanish, offered on both a year-round and summer-only basis, or any combination of the two, can be completed in its entirety on the Madrid Campus.
Students are encouraged to participate in the Ibero-American Certificate Program. Over the course of two semesters (or one spring semester and one summer session) in residence in Madrid, the student takes courses in the arts, history, culture, economics, and politics of Iberia (Spain and Portugal) and Latin America. Participants can also opt to join a 3-week seminar trip to South America during the summer.
Saint Louis University – Madrid Campus also places a strong emphasis on language acquisition and fluency. Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Portuguese, and classical Greek and Latin are offered in addition to English and Spanish.
Further, while most courses are offered in English, students can choose to take a number of selected courses across disciplines in Spanish, an exceptional opportunity to develop fluency.
